Nigel Leehane is an environmental management professional, with over 30 years’ experience. After studying environmental science and environmental technology, he worked for five years in the UK opencast coal industry, in a variety of roles including exploration, environmental planning and production management.
He has been an environmental management consultant for over 25 years, working for a wide range of clients across many manufacturing, service and public sectors. He has led major projects for large organisations and also has participated in UK government environmental programmes supporting SMEs. His work has taken him to over 20 countries around the world. Having led environment management and sustainability teams in a number of consultancies, he now works for his own company, Leehane Environmental Consulting Ltd.
His experience includes supporting corporate environmental management teams in planning and undertaking compliance and internal management systems audits for environment and health & safety. He has developed audit management processes and protocols for clients and developed and delivered auditor training for organisations in many countries globally. He also works with corporate clients to support them in developing robust data collection processes as the basis for reporting environmental and broader sustainability performance. This includes undertaking internal validation audits of data collection processes and for other clients, carrying out verification/assurance of the reports. In 2011 he obtained an MBA, to better equip him to understand the business drivers for organisations, and so develop audit processes to add value to businesses, rather than be a burden.
Nigel is a practicing environmental auditor with extensive experience of international standards development. He is registered as a Principal Environmental Auditor by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and has been an auditor examiner for over ten years. Earlier in 2018, he produced the IEMA report “Future Challenges for Environmental Auditing”. Nigel has chaired the UK mirror committee AUS1 for management systems auditing and was the UK’s technical expert for environment for the revision of ISO 19011, which resulted in ISO 19011:2011 and 2018. He has been the chair of SES/1/1 and was one of the UK technical experts in ISO SC1 WG5 that developed ISO 14001:2015. He also participated in the development of ISO 17021 Part 2. He is the current chair of SES/1/2 and of ISO TC 207/SC 2 for environmental auditing. He led the SC2 ad hoc group that developed the NWIP for verification of environmental reports, the future ISO 14016.
