Lord Redesdale warns of energy complacency
Lord Redesdale, who set up the Energy Managers’ Association (EMA) in 2012, told his audience of FMs from across Europe that energy brown-outs – intentional reductions in voltage imposed to reduce load and prevent a power outage – remained likely in the UK as a result of a vanishingly small gap between energy supply and demand.
Lord Redesdale believes that energy management is a subsidiary discipline within facilities management and that, just as with FM, there are now major concerns about an impending reduction in practising energy management specialists.
“The demographics are appalling,” said Lord Redesdale. “Most energy managers are close to retirement. Where is the next generation of energy managers going to come from? How do we develop energy managers and push them out into buildings?”
As well as his call for more visibility of the work energy managers do, Lord Redesdale warned organisations that it was all too easy to look at the work of energy managers and become complacent.
”Because energy managers are routinely introducing small energy-saving measures, what management gets to see are bills remaining pretty static, and energy usage that appears to be under control.” This, Lord Redesdale suggested, hid the underlying trajectory of fuel costs and acted as a false indicator of the scale of the problem facing organisations.
